23rd Annual West Point Class of 1971 Tom Martin Shootout, 3-6 October 2023, Chambersburg, PA 17201
The 23rd Tom Martin Annual West Point Class of 1971 Shootout began Tuesday, October 3 with a Class Executive Council Meeting at the Hampton Inn, Chambersburg, PA followed by golf at 1:30PM at the Founders Course at Penn National Golf Club in Fayetteville, PA. At 6PM the class gathered at the Penn National Golf Club outdoor pavilion for a welcome by Golf Commissioner, Robert (Jake) Jacobson and Penn National owner, Patti Nitterhouse. A total of 102 individuals attended the picnic dinner, including classmates, spouses, and friends.
On Wednesday, October 4 several events were planned. Several classmates and their families signed up for a tour of the Battle of Gettysburg from 8:30AM – 5PM. And the golfers went back to Penn National to play the Iron Forge Course (A “links-designed” course). Later that evening, we all gathered for a dinner buffet at The Orchards restaurant where the winners from Day 1 & Day 2 were announced for men and ladies golf plus other announcements. Below is a picture of the Founders Course at the Penn National Golf course. A total of 112 individuals attended the dinner, including classmates, spouses, and friends.
On Thursday, October 5, we again planned several events beginning with golf in the morning at the Waynesboro Country Club course, located in Waynesboro, PA. That afternoon, an “Afternoon High Tea” was scheduled at the home of and hosted by Patti Nitterhouse which was attended by 22 ladies of the class. On Thursday evening, classmates had a “Free Evening” which normally involved the scheduling of local dinners organized by regiment, by cadet companies, or by class friends at local eateries in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, or Hagerstown, MD. Our final day, Friday, October 6, we gathered for our final day of golf on a misty Penn National Founders Course layout using a “Scramble” format for the first time at the shootout. Later that evening, we all gathered for another dinner buffet at The Orchards restaurant where the winners from Day 3 & Day 4 were announced for men and ladies golf plus other announcements that included the recognition of the event host, the recognition of the winning regiment and the awarding of the beautiful class sport coat to the selected regimental representative , plus a great presentation by Jack Klevecz and Hugh McDonald closing out the end of the “Woodie Award”! A total of 106 individuals attended the dinner, including classmates, spouses, and friends.
